INSTALLING SHPFLTNAT
For the great unwashed, here's what to do to use the font:
1) Install bitmap fonts in your system using Font/DA Mover.
The point of this font is to print musical characters that can be inserted in text, as in a word processor — not for musical notation. Adobe's SONATA font has beautifully drawn characters, but since they are scaled to relative sizes, using them in text changes the line spacing drastically; for instance, to use the "natural" sign at the correct size in a line of text, the spacing gets changed to quintuple spacing (the character has a ton of white space above and below it). The notes in shpfltnat have deliberately large noteheads so that they will print large enough to read in a block of 12-point text (and will also show up on those crappy university microfilms).
Shpfltnat 2.3 is a Type 1 PostScript font, which means that it works with versions of Adobe Type Manager, any version higher than 1.2. It is not "hinted," because Fontographer's default hinting scheme causes some characters to print exceedingly strangely at small sizes.
NOTES ON REPEATING CHARACTERS:
Some characters in the font are set up to print repeating patterns. Most notable among them is the extended trill, using characters B, N and M; B begins the trill, N makes repeating squiggles, and M tails off the trill. Shift-option P repeated again and again will make a continuous piano keyboard. A length of musical staff will be formed by repeating the equal key. Repeated shift-option-V's will form a continuous sine wave pattern. A series of beamed eighth notes or beamed sixteenth notes can be had by the series opt-z,opt-x,opt-x,opt-x....,opt-c or opt-v,opt-b,opt-b,opt-b.....,opt-m; the space between consecutive eighth notes may be enlarged with the beam extender, opt-d; and between consecutive sixteenth notes by the beam extender, opt-j.
Scholarly publications and scores which use this font (including dissertations) must contain an acknowledgement.
